Everyone experiences periods of stress, sadness, grief and conflict, so when you're feeling off it can be hard to know if it's time to see a professional about the problem. Fortunately, the myth that counseling is for crazy people or dysfunctional families are fading, and people are realizing that a counselor can be very useful in helping us gain perspective during the unclear points in our lives.
The question then becomes, how do I know I need professional help?
Consider the following:
-Are you concerned about your feelings? Are they overwhelming you?
-Are conversations with your family or spouse going nowhere?
-Are you becoming overly reliant on your family and friends to help you with your current troubles?
-Are past issues in your life, or your family’s life having a negative impact on your relationships with each other?
-Are you having difficulty coping?
-Are you having trouble at school or work?
-Are your relationships strained?
Seeking help is a sign of strength. Talking things out with loved ones, and working with your feelings will help you get out of your rut and help you move into much more productive patterns in your life.
